We’re proud and excited to be screening the roller derby documentary Revolutions at Underwire Festival 2017 - and we’re also offering you and a friend the chance to see the film for free and a real roller derby game too.
Five years in the making, it follows the Dublin Roller Girls and the Cork City Firebirds through their ups and downs, introducing us to some of the wonderful characters that make roller derby what it is.
The sport started in Chicago in the 1930s, but had a resurgence in the early 2000s when it quickly became dominated by all-women teams. It has simple rules, and a DIY ethic.
A sport that breaks social barriers and is open and welcoming to all, it’s inspired a whole subculture of female camaraderie and physical power that’s as much fun to watch as it is to play.
Roller derby names
Roller derby players don’t take themselves too seriously, and one of the most joyful parts of the game is choosing a unique roller derby name for each player - usually a pun with some serious edge to it.
With stage names like ‘Uniscorn’ and ‘Bloody Harry’, the Dublin Roller Girls are showing just how to pick your own roller derby name in style.
The competition
Now we’re offering you the chance to see the film for free AND see a real live match with the London Rollergirls.
The film is screening at the Curzon in Aldgate this Saturday as part of Underwire Festival 2017, and the winner of our competition will get 2 tickets to the event. They’ll also get 2 tickets to see the London Rollergirls v Dublin in March next year.
All you need to do to enter is tell us what your roller derby name would be.
You can either tweet us @underwirefest with the message ‘my roller derby name would be‘ followed by your answer, or tell us in the comments on this Facebook post.
If you don’t have social media, you can also email us your answer at [email protected].
Terms and conditions
The winner will be announced on Friday 24th November and will be at Underwire Festival and London Rollergirls’ discretion. We’ll announce the winner’s name publicly on social media.
The prize doesn’t include travel, and there is no cash alternative. If you win and are not able to make one or both of the events we are free to offer the prize to another entrant of our choosing.
